Track My Roll – Transforming the Bowling Experience with AI-Powered Lane Detection

The Challenge

Bowling venues are increasingly seeking ways to modernise gameplay and boost player engagement. Traditionally, there was minimal interaction between physical play and digital effects, creating a fragmented experience.

The client’s goal was to track bowling balls in real time across multiple lanes to power interactive visuals projected onto lanes and surrounding screens. However, once prototyped, a critical challenge emerged — latency.
By the time ball position data was captured, processed, and displayed, the ball had already moved significantly. This lag disrupted the sync between physical action and digital visuals, breaking immersion and confusing players.

To deliver a seamless hybrid gameplay experience, the system needed to go beyond simple tracking into real-time prediction — ensuring digital animations stayed perfectly in sync with the ball’s live moveme

The Solution

Megatron Solutions developed a bespoke AI-powered vision system capable of tracking and predicting ball trajectories in milliseconds.

Phase 1 – High-Speed Multi-Lane Detection

  • Installed high-speed overhead cameras across lanes.
  • Leveraged OpenCV and YOLOv5 for robust detection in varying lighting and conditions.
  • Normalised detection to adapt to different player styles and ball paths.

Phase 2 – Predictive Trajectory Modelling

  • Built predictive ML models using TensorFlow to forecast direction, speed, and endpoint.
  • Enabled visual systems to render ahead of the ball’s actual position, solving latency issues.

Phase 3 – Real-Time Streaming & Immersive Visualisation

  • Deployed a low-latency WebSocket API to stream live data to the Unity 3D engine.
  • Projected dynamic, immersive animations directly onto lanes and display screens.
  • Delivered a fluid, interactive experience that elevated gameplay.
